Satellite TV has always been a haven for some of the best Movies available on television. A host of channels are available to deliver top-rate movie content to your television, whether it’s free content or a paid network. Today, with even more popular original programming available on subscription cable channels, demand has never been higher. Most channels are available in both regular digital or in high definition, bringing the best picture to your living room in true 1080P quality. The top five movie network are reviewed below.
1) HBO
HBO, formerly referred to by the extended name “Home Box Office” has become much more than movies. The first to dive headfirst into original content, HBO proved that movie networks could compete on the same level as network TV in terms of programming. While HBO does offer its wide selection of movies, it now shows a variety of original programming, including hits Entourage, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Reruns of original classics like The Sopranos can still be found on some of HBO 8 different networks, all available in both standard definition and high definition.
2) Showtime
For years, Showtime was the “add-on” movie network, often coming in behind Cinemax and much closer to Starz. In the past few years, largely as a result of the popularity of two original series (Weeds and Dexter), Showtime has shot to the top of the comparative heap. Competing head to head with HBO in the creativity of its original series, it’s now one of the most requested movie channels on satellite TV. In addition to its series though, it offers a huge array of first-run and classic movies on 10 standard definition and one high definition channel.
3) Cinemax
Cinemax has continued to focus on what it does best: bringing new theatrical releases and top-notch performances to Cinemax with as few repeats as possible. It does this on a wide variety of channels, with five regular definition and four HD TV offerings. With Cinemax, you can expect the best of The Movies brought right to your TV.
4) Starz
Starz has made its reputation on bringing movies to TV before anybody else does – and it continues to do so into 2010 and beyond. Starz networks brings first-run features to their network before they hit anywhere else, and plays All Movies (and only movies) all the time. It’s a must for any movie lover.
5) AMC
Yet another movie channel that has succumbed to its acronym, AMC was formerly known as American Movie Classics. Over the past 10 years, its programming has shifted – and although it’s now a free network, its programming is extremely unique and similar to paid networks in this regard. With series Breaking Bad and Mad Men garnering critical acclaim, AMC is poised to be a leader in satellite movies and TV programming.
